This course is foundational to the Co-Active Coaching curriculum; it lasts 2.5 days and is non-residential. It is also a course that stands on its own if you want to learn coaching skills, but don't necessarily want to become a professional coach. There are no prerequisites to take this course.

The purpose of this course is to provide training and practical experience in the techniques and skills of the coaching profession, specifically Co-Active Coaching. This course is oriented toward participation and practical experience rather than lecture. You will have extensive opportunities to coach and to receive feedback on your coaching.

"Before I went on the Fundamentals, I strongly believed that I would make a great coach, and probably believed that I was already doing the job without realising it. But what the workshop showed me was how much more there was to be being a coach than just asking the right questions and listening, and how much more I had to learn." Kate French CPCC, ACC

The first day will kick off with an opening hour or so of introductions from all participants and the leaders of the course. Then comes the first coaching demo, followed by debriefing/feedback demo by the leaders. You then get the opportunity in 2s or 3s to coach and be coached, then feedback on your experiences on a one to one level and to the group. There is homework that will be issued to you for that evening and after more coaching the day comes to a close.

The second day you will experience the learning steps of Co-Active Coaching, explanations of the cornerstones of Co-Active Coaching and how the model fits together. You will see a demo of how a coach would design an alliance at the beginning of a coaching relationship and a chance to practice these skills. There is more coaching around particular areas and full group coaching sessions.

The final day looks at the bringing yourself fully to a coaching relationship for the benefit of your clients, an opportunity to look at what niches people work with/ would like to work with, including exploration of this for yourself. More coaching. An area of the timeline dedicated to enrolment of clients, more information about the subsequent courses, more coaching and then completions.

As a result of taking this course, you will learn to:
- Use the four cornerstones of Co-Active Coaching with your clients.
- Communicate with your clients using the five contexts of Co-Active Coaching.
- Use the Life (Balance) wheel with clients.
- Distinguish and use the three levels of listening.
- Demonstrate the most often used coaching skills.
